Complex Knowledge Modelling with Functional Entity Relationship Diagrams
نویسنده
چکیده
Modelling complex knowledge resources can be problematical as there is currently no formalism that can represent the nature of the data-seeking process at a conceptual level. We introduce the functional entity (FE), an encapsulated data resource that acts as a question-answering system, and identify nine different functional entities based on three main types of question-answer entailment: instance-dominant, valuedominant, and connection-dominant. We use functional entities to develop a generalisation of the EntityRelationship Diagram (ERD), the Functional-Entity Relationship Diagram (FERD), which can be used for high level conceptual modelling of heterogeneous knowledge systems. We further describe extensions to the FERD that permit modelling of resources that cannot be represented by traditional propositional form, and extensions relevant to large-scale documentation.

Generating an Algebraic Specification from an ER-Model
Entity-Relationship modelling is a rather intuitive technique for specifying the structure of complex data. The technique is popular in part because the structure of an ER-model is easily grasped, and it is usually supported by diagrams or other visualizing tools. This paper deals with a detailed analysis of ER-modelling with the goal of deriving an algebraic speci cation for a given ER-model. ...
متن کاملThe Functional-Entity Relationship Diagram: Conceptual Modelling For Complex Knowledge Systems
Designing and building a knowledge management system involves ensuring that the right facts can be called upon to answer the question at hand, and coordinating a number of disparate resources. Modelling such resources can be problematical as there is currently no formalism that can represent the nature of the dataseeking process at a conceptual level. We introduce the functional entity (FE), an...
متن کاملDynamic process modelling using Petri nets with applications to nuclear power plant emergency management
Complex information systems are difficult to model and expensive to build. Numerous process modelling methodologies, such as action workflow, data flow diagrams, decision trees, entity relationship diagrams, process maps, role activity diagrams and role interaction nets, have been developed to provide high level abstraction of a system. Despite their huge popularity, these methodologies cannot ...

متن کاملSketching ER Diagrams
Hand-drawn diagrams are frequently used as the first visualization of a model. Converting these preliminary diagrams into a specific formal format is time consuming. Computer based sketch-tools can offer support during the informal sketching stage and automatic conversion to formal representations. Entity Relationship diagrams are particularly difficult to convert because of their characteristi...
